Digital Imaging Weeks 2-4. DIGITAL COLLAGE TOOLS AND PRINCIPLES

To create your first collage assignments, here I will convey some information supplementing what I will teach in class, that you should also copy to your notes.

Example of a digital collage using several figures from various eras.  J.Webb

The collage above is a supreme example of the work you'll be doing in this first unit.  Locating clear images to sample, most often from the Internet, removing the original photo backgrounds and replacing it with a new image to make each of the photos appear as part of a new whole.

In this case, I've sampled pictures from historical articles, album covers, online advertisements, and a cartoon.  Using Photoshop's lasso tool, I selected parts of the photo I wanted to remove - then tapped the DELETE key to remove that element.  I used the move tool to arrange each of the photos so that I could see everyone's face in the final collage.  This technique is what you'll do to complete the following tasks.

TASK 1 - BASIC COLLAGE
Make a US Letter-sized document.  Copy three objects from photos obtained on the internet into the Photoshop document.  Use the Lasso Tool (L) to cut away the backgrounds from each layer.
To earn credit on this assignment, you must do the following:
 (1) SAVE YOUR FILE AS A PHOTOSHOP DOCUMENT (PSD) and email to teacher.jwebb@gmail.com
(2) SAVE A JPEG TO POST ONTO YOUR BLOG. (Do NOT email your JPEG file)

TASK 2 - NOVICE COLLAGE
Take 3 Car images and overlap them.  Use the Free Transform (Command+T) to scale your pictures up, to fill up the screen.  *Double-click the picture to release free transform.  See the example collage below. LEAVE AS LITTLE WHITE SPACE AS NECESSARY.  MAKE THE PICTURES OVERLAP.
